In the fall of 2013, we started a new program called "Family Formation." Why Family Formation?
A careful reading through the documents of the Catholic Church quickly reveals the Church's great expectations for the family. "The right and duty of parents to give education is essential ... original and primary ... and it is irreplaceable and incapable of being entirely delegated to others." Familiaris Consortio, 36 "The family is a domestic church." Lumen Gentium, 11
As a Church, we realize our ineffectiveness to catechize children if their parents are not involved in the process. By evangelizing parents to realize what the Church is asking of them, and giving them support and encouragement in their mission, we are answering the Church's call. In a nutshell, this is what Family Formation accomplishes. Adult catechesis teaches and encourages parents and provides them with the Catholic "know-how" to share the Good News and the beauty of the Catholic Faith with their children.
Family Formation is a tried and true Catholic teaching resource developed by regular parents with normal family lives. The materials are engaging, down-to-earth, and easy to understand. Family Formation is meant to bring the family together once a week to learn their Faith in joy and with excitement, rather than making learning about God and the Church a boring or dreaded weekly task.
With each Home Lesson and gathering at church, we hope you will begin to see sparks of light and conversion in yourselves and in the children. St. Gerald is the 99th parish in the United States and Canada to implement Family Formation. Through the years, many have shared inspiring stories of truths of the Faith they were finally able to understand, or were introduced to for the first time, through teaching their children with the Home Lessons.
After using the Family Formation program in our parish for several years, we are seeing great fruits in family life, in the youth who have been positively impacted by their parents' involvement in their religious education, and in the parish dynamic as a whole. Simply stated: Family Formation is working in passing on the Faith!
